Combining Main Classifications and Sub-classifications

Main classifications are used to identify the "main" topics of contributions to a conference.

Enter the main classifications into the screen

Scientific Program Administration / Classifications / Main Classifications

It is important when entering this information to avoid spaces in the Classification Codes. For example, one may enter MC1 for classification code, and MC1: Circular and Linear Colliders for the Classification Description. It is often useful to have the MC code in the classification description so authors may easily reference their main classification by number.

Main classifications can be combined with sub-classifications to refine the subject of a contribution to a conference.

Taking the European PAC as an example, there are 8+1 main classifications:

  • 01 Circular Colliders
  • 02 Synchrotron Light Sources and FELs
  • 03 Linear Colliders, Lepton Accelerators, and New Acceleration Techniques
  • 04 Hadron Accelerators
  • 05 Beam Dynamics and Electromagnetic Fields
  • 06 Instrumentation, Controls, Feedback, and Operational Aspects
  • 07 Accelerator Technology Main Systems
  • 08 Applications of Accelerators, Technology Transfer, and Relations with Industry

+1

  • Opening, closing, and special presentations (reserved only for contributions that cannot be classified otherwise such as opening presentations by politicians, talks on topics outside of the range of the conference programme, etc.).

Conferences/workshops can choose to use only a main classification (as described above) or to combine the main classifications with sub-classifications. See

  • Classifications / Sub-classifications and
  • Classifications / Combine Main and Sub-classifications

It is necessary to indicate in the SPMS whether the conference will use main classifications only, sub-classifications only, or combine main with sub-classification.

See

Overall Database Administration / System Parameters / User

and set Sub-Classification Required to "Yes" or "No".

This will decide whether contributors will or will not be required to enter both a main plus a sub-classification when creating abstracts.

Experts/Referees

The main classifications screen is also used to enter the names of referees or experts and to assign privileges. Click on "Experts" to the right-hand side of each main classification.

See more on refereeing under Refereeing Module Administration.
