Partial Refereeing process at IPAC’17 (Ivan Andrian)

  • Peer-reviewed papers have more weight in the scientific community
  • Pilot scheme at IPAC’17 to have some 200 papers reviewed on a voluntary first-come-first-served basis
  • Early but tight timeline required
  • Important investment from voluntary referees
  • Successful result but watch out for scalability

Q&A

Question: (Jana): IOP requires paper template which is different from the JACoW template, how to ease the process?
Action/Answer: JACoW template remains; recommend use of Latex
Question: (Jana): Process for referee choice (determination of qualifications) and assignment
Action/Answer: This remains a manual process that requires several criteria to be considered (expertise, language,…), done by a group of qualified people (like Todd who knows 80% of the community), there is no need to “flag” these people in the SPMS repository. The risk that a referee is co-author of a paper is acknowledged and handled. There is no conflict of interest to review a colleague’s paper. However, in the US, being a reviewer is an added value for obtaining a green card (so beware!).
Question: (Jan): Does this impact our requirements to Indico?
Action/Answer: No, Indico has already a referee module, our refereeing process should be clearly documented and standardised, so that it is straightforward for a generic Indico implementation
Question: (Toshinari): Referee should be anonymous for the paper author.
Action/Answer: Absolutely, unfortunately bugs occurred during the development process
